HS Code (Harmonized System Code)
The internationally standardised customs classification code that determines duty, incentives and export-restriction status.
Definition
The Harmonized System is an internationally standardised numerical classification for traded products. Pharmaceutical formulations generally fall under Chapter 30 (headings 3001–3006), while APIs typically fall under Chapter 29 (organic chemicals). The specific 8-digit code determines customs duty, export-incentive eligibility, and whether a DGFT export restriction currently applies.
Why It Matters
HS classification is confirmed against the current DGFT ITC(HS) database at the time of shipment, since a molecule's restriction status can change by notification without changing its underlying HS code.
